It's been a very good week, creatively and socially. We hosted two dinner parties, inviting good friends with whom we rarely get to spend quality time, and we've also been out two evenings with two other couples whose company we thoroughly enjoy. In the meantime, I've managed to spend a some great hours in the studio, finishing one piece and starting another. The photo above is of a trial I made, which I subsequently chose not to use, but I love it. Here is the completed piece in which the trial was not used:
The iris that I was auditioning was replaced by the grasses that I ultimately went with. I have redone this piece in my head a thousand times and in my sketchbook, and will eventually rework it on another piece of silk. Here are a couple of detail shots:
On the down side of this week: our county commissioners have decided to close four branches of our library AND all of our beautiful lakeside parks, due to lack of funds. Two of the newly elected gang of six have led a movement to fire a number of salaried workers, hire new ones at higher wages, stop and restart work on county building projects, and a myriad of other idiotic decisions, spending exorbitant amounts of money, thus running short on their budget. So, due to their lack of foresight, our children will suffer by having no libraries from which to borrow reading books this summer, and no parks where they can swim and play. It's a sad time here and I am mad as hell! I could go on and on, but you don't want to hear about it anymore than I do!
It's been unseasonably warm here, with temps in the high 90s every afternoon...and it's only June! I wonder what July and August will bring. As I write, we are sitting outside on Bakeshop's patio on Peachtree, enjoying a cool early morning breeze, before the afternoon inferno begins. I hope it's cooler where you are.
PEACE
little Charlie is away this week - you can read all about it by going to his blog (which is to the right in my sidebar)

It's a good thing we have creativity or governments would drive us crazy. I'd go crazy if they closed our local libraries.
Love your new work.
It all makes me scratch my head and wonder what they are thinking. While we were in Ashland Oregon the same thing happened to us for about seven months in 2007. Libraries are so vital to our communities. I hope the commissioners come to their senses.
Your pieces are wonderful, I am glad you get to play!!!
Charlie has a blog!! Woo hoo! You have some yummilicious work.
A truly millepostium! Congrats to your beautiful work and your years of blogging. These pieces are spectacular!
Congrats on your thousandth post, Judy! Your new work is beautiful. I commiserate re: funding cuts -- many of the California State Parks are due for closure, including a few in Humboldt County.
Happy One Thousandth post (or what ever you may say).
I've tried to post a comment on Charlie's blog but it won't work out. I just have to log on over and over again without any result =(((
That Charlie is such a comedian! I love his smiling face on the train ride. Of cours, his parents look pretty happy too. Your artwork is gorgeous. I recognize the building from your trip (I am too lazy to go look up the name)and I love how you used it. The iris will find its time to shine. Congratulations on 1000 posts! Wow!!!
