We've enjoyed a really wonderful and very full day! SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) has an Atlanta campus, and their Trois Gallery is currently exhibiting several works by Shinique Smith.
The Wind in My Door
I knew nothing of her work, but Googled her before we set out from the condo, and after learning a bit about her and seeing a few photos of her work, I couldn't wait to get to the gallery! There were only a few pieces to see, but they were marvelous, and it was great to be able to get right up next to them and thoroughly examine her techniques.
Most of Shinique Smith's works are large, and as you can see, they are very colorful. At one time she was the only female in a graffiti team - you can see her sweeping lines in the piece above - and so she is used to working large. Smith uses a lot of recycled clothing and fiber, which is not only an environmental statement but also one of society: how we use what we wear as a method of telling others who we are.
She has exhibited many bales of her recycled clothing, like this one, Bale Variant No. 0012:

We departed the city for home at about 3:00 PM, hoping to avoid Atlanta's horrendous rush hour traffic. As you can see, weather complicated matters
We're home all safe and sound, and I even managed to squeeze in a bit of studio time this evening!

Thanks for the link to the article about Shinique Smith. I had never heard of her and found her work intriguing.
I was so sorry to read about your mother's death. How wonderful that you have a picture of her with Charlie. Two of your special people together near the limits of their lives. You will always miss her because she was one of the anchors of your life and always there. My mother is here physically but not mentally and I find myself thinking that I will ask her something...
