Dealing with Senseless Loss

Our little town, and most especially our church,
is dealing with the loss of one of the most promising
young men I have ever known.
Gone just like that -
on his 18th birthday.
We knew his parents and siblings well,
and we are grieving with them,
although I can not even begin to understand how they hurt.

So I've tried to keep busy while remembering
his smiling face,
his kindness,
his steady focus on his goals.

I went to the studio and made stamps
and then I scrounged around for scraps of fabric.
I just needed to make marks.

and then I rolled out the dough
for Molded Gingerbread Cookies
and I made them

It was a difficult day -
trying to forget,
but wanting to remember.
trying to stay busy,
but wanting time to sit and reflect.
trying to be happy,
but so overcome by sadness.

there is no peace for us
when someone young is taken away.

It is so difficult to make sense out of what is sense-less. Please know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers. xoxo

It is always sad when young people die. I hope you can get a reasonably nice Christmas despite this sorrow.

It is so confusing...do you try to think of him and feel the pain or stop the pain by thinking other thoughts but no, that is not right either. There simply is no right answer that will stop the pain till you are done feeling it with such raw intensity. The one comfort that I can give is to think of it as a gift to him and to his family. You are allowing his passing to have an impact on your life and your pain stands as a witness of his life.

How tragic -- there's no making sense but you're doing the right things -- pause, reflect, remember, and doing things that touch others. My thoughts are with you.
